D-Backs and Dodgers Throw Out the Faster Game

by Jason Franz

Five hours and forty-five minutes of game time. So much for all those rule changes to speed up the game.

Apparently the greatest motivation to end a seemingly never-ending game is threaten your #3 catcher that he'll be pitching the 16th inning if he doesn't end it right then and there. That was the tale Jeff Mathis shared after lacing the longest, loopiest hanging curve ball in in the history of Chase Field into left center.

This all came to be after Chris Owings knocked a two-on, two-out dinger off of once untouchable Kenley Jansen, who is now showcasing a lovely 18.00 ERA. Apparently, he's trying to distract hitters from the fact his filthiness has become pretty tame with high kicks and limited velocity.

With a matinee closeout game on Wednesday, there might be some early season call-ups that'll make the sixth game of the regular season feel a lot like a late February split squad outing.
